Title: Protest Too Much
Category: AU, pre-slash
TEEN (for Sawyer, he sweareth)
Summary: Mostly follows the events of the series, but without all that messy Kate business-- Sawyer admits to his attraction to Sayid fairly early on. Missing scene-type stuff and the like. Set during 'House of the Rising Sun'. Also very short.
Disclaimer: I don't own any of it. *sigh*
Feedback: makes me veddy happy.
"What makes you think my answer will be any different today?"
"Please. Just give me a minute alone to plead my case." Sawyer smiled winningly.
Sayid remained un-won. "Sawyer..."
"You don't trust me alone? It's a tent, broad daylight, it's a *tent*, beach full of people, it's *a* *tent*, just for two minutes, and it's a freakin' TENT. C'mon."
Sayid went with him, but kept firm in his position. "I will never let you kiss me."
"Okay, I get it, baby, I get it. I mean, I can be reasonable. I don't know who you are, what you do, where you go when you're not around. I get that. But you gotta understand, I'm willin'. You can tell me as much or as little as you want. You can stay all night or you can go slinkin' off. If you want me on my knees, if you want me on my back, if you want me up against a tree or down in the sand, if you want me tied up--" He produced a pair of handcuffs, dangling them in front of Sayid.
"I don't want you."
"Yeah, yeah, you will not try me here or there, you will not try me anywhere."
"Marshall's, prob'ly. Found 'em lyin' around."
"You disgust me."
"What? Oh, come on! What was I supposed to do? They were on the beach! I was just supposed to leave 'em?"
"You obviously shouldn't have them."
"You want 'em? 'Cause baby, all you got to do is come and get 'em." Sawyer smirked, kept them dangling there.
Sayid shook his head. He'd started to turn away when out on the beach, all hell broke loose.
"What a long, strange day it's been, huh?"
Sayid didn't say anything, just gazed into the fire.
"Come on." Sawyer dropped down to sit beside him. "Haven't got two words out of you since--"
"I'm not really in the mood for your nonsense right now."
"Any idea when you'll be in the mood for my nonsense?"
"I doubt I ever will be. Not that you'll be bothered to keep it in mind when next you decide to bother me."
"I stayed here."
"I noticed. I'd be hard pressed to *stop* noticing."
"You ain't gonna ask me why? Kate asked."
"Oh, yes. Kate." He rolled his eyes.
"You *are* jealous. You're jealous of her, why won't y--"
"I am not jealous of Kate. She stayed on the beach. You stayed on the beach. Jack isn't on the beach, and I'm sure that was a great motivator." He stood and walked off, towards the temporary shelter he'd erected for himself.
Sawyer followed. "You're on the beach."
"If you think it's a good idea to stay here, then this is where I'm gonna stay. You're a bright guy, and yeah, I haven't given up on you."
"Let me know when you do."
"I'm not going to give up on you." He jogged to catch up, stood close at the entrance to Sayid's tent, close enough to feel the other man's body heat. "If I stayed for anyone, it was for you and not for her. I'm sorry the handcuffs aren't any good anymore, but I seem to recall you weren't too into that, so I guess it's not too big a loss."
"Sawyer-- You think I was right?"
"Yeah. If I thought going up to them caves was a smarter thing to do, I'd be fighting with Jack right now instead of chasing you all over the place trying to get into your pants. I'd still make day trips to get into your pants, but I'm not *stupid*. If I didn't think you had the right idea, I wouldn't be staying for you."
Sayid smiled, barely, and pulled Sawyer into a tight hug. He leaned up to whisper in his ear. "I will never let you kiss me."
"Anything you say, sweetheart." Sawyer held him back. "Anything you say..."
